Jean Dubuffet (1901–1985) was a French painter and sculptor who pioneered the concept of Art Brut, or “raw art”—a radical rejection of traditional aesthetics in favor of work created outside the boundaries of official culture, such as art by children, psychiatric patients, and the self-taught. Dubuffet sought to strip art of academic pretension and return it to a more instinctive, primal form of expression. Using unconventional materials like sand, tar, and gravel, his textured, unpolished surfaces defied refinement and celebrated the unfiltered human experience. Dubuffet’s vision of art as free from cultural constraints profoundly influenced postwar avant-garde movements and helped expand the definition of what art could be.
